A newly installed manhole cover shouldn’t rattle, rock, or make a loud “clack” when commercial vehicles pass over it.

For contractors and site engineers, a noisy utility cover is more than just a nuisance for local residents—it is an early warning sign of catastrophic infrastructure failure. Before assuming the heavy-duty iron casting itself is defective and needs a costly replacement, it is crucial to audit the installation site.

Here are the top five reasons your manhole cover is rocking:

1. Uneven Frame Seating

The cover must sit perfectly flush within its frame. If the frame itself was installed at a slight angle, or if it twisted during the mortar curing process, the cover will never seat correctly. Even a millimeter of warp in the frame’s installation will cause significant rocking under commercial traffic loads.

2. Failed Bedding Material

Standard bricklaying cement is simply not strong enough to absorb the immense kinetic energy transferred from an EN124 Class D400 cover into the frame. If incorrect mortar is used, it will quickly crack and disintegrate under stress. This causes the frame to loosen and the cover to rattle.

3. Debris Between the Frame and Cover

Often, the simplest explanation is the correct one. During road resurfacing, heavy construction, or extreme weather, small stones, dried concrete, or loose asphalt can become trapped in the frame’s seating rim. This debris prevents the cover from lying completely flat.

4. Poor Surrounding Compaction

If the asphalt or sub-base immediately surrounding the concrete chamber is poorly compacted, constant traffic will cause the road surface to dip. This shifts the structural pressure unevenly onto the iron frame, forcing it out of alignment.

5. Incorrect Frame Support

The frame must be fully supported across its entire flange. If there are hidden voids or air pockets in the bedding mortar beneath the frame, the metal will flex downward when a tire hits it, resulting in a dangerous see-saw effect.

A Simple Contractor Check

If a newly installed cover is rocking or producing a loud metal-on-metal sound, don’t ignore it. Inspect the frame seating, bedding, cover interface and surrounding road surface before the problem develops into a larger maintenance issue.
