Perfect Frame Seating & Depth Calculation

The secret to a multi-decade lifespan lies entirely in load transfer mechanics. The iron frame must absorb the immense shock of heavy traffic and transfer that energy directly into the subterranean solid concrete chamber, avoiding stress on the surrounding asphalt.

  • Calculate the Depth: The cover must align perfectly flush with the final road surface (or a maximum of 3mm-5mm below). Calculate total depth by adding the frame’s thickness to your required bedding mortar layer.
  • Apply High-Strength Bedding: Never use standard bricklaying cement. Apply a continuous, unbroken 15mm-25mm layer of high-strength, non-shrink epoxy resin or polymer mortar.
  • Seat and Level: Lower the frame onto the wet mortar bed, pressing it until material squeezes out the edges. Level it meticulously to match the road camber before inserting the heavy ductile cover.
  • Haunch the Frame: Pack additional mortar around the outer flange, sloping it downward to permanently lock the frame in place.

Common Site Errors to Avoid

  • Spot Bedding: Placing isolated blobs of mortar instead of a continuous bed causes the ductile iron castings to bend unevenly, eventually cracking the concrete support chamber.
  • Poor Compaction: Failing to mechanically compact the asphalt tightly against the installed frame allows rainwater ingress, quickly eroding the road’s sub-base.
